24.Dubai Creek

Besides being a waterway, Dubai Creek connects the city’s age-old history with its modern life. Dividing the city into two, the creek is about 8.7 miles long and connects Deira and Bur Dubai. The Al Maktoum dynasty came into being in this area in 1833 which brought the start of modern Dubai .

A Look at the History
To trade, fish and pearl, many used Dubai Creek in earlier days. In the early 1900s, the center of Dubai’s pearling business included up to 3,000 boats for their pearling ventures . Historical Roots
In the past, Jumeirah was mainly a peaceful fishing village for the Arab fishermen. Traditional coral and palm-frond houses were typical in this area because that was how they built in those times.

Development and Change

37.Dubai Gold Souk

Dubai’s reputation for trading and its worldwide standing in gold commerce is reflected by the Dubai Gold Souk in Deira’s historic district. The market is famous for its gold jewelry, precious stones and traditional handcrafted items which bring in shoppers as well as visitors from all over the world.

Historical Significance
Created in the mid-20th century as a small market, Gold Souk is now known as one of the biggest and most famous gold markets worldwide. • From 1975 to 1979, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, had the Jumeirah Mosque built so he could give it as a gift to his son and successor HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The mosque was built in the medieval Fatimid style and its stone carvings mix features from Egypt and Syria. The mosque is even more noticeable because of its white stone walls and twin minarets which are typical Islamic features.
• Besides offering worshippers a place, mosques connect different cultures. Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) runs tours for non-Muslims, helping build better connections and mutual understanding. • All of the walls of the Jumeirah Mosque are made from sparkling white stone and decorated with patterns and carvings from the Fatimid era. 39.Mall of the Emirates

Mall of the Emirates was opened in November 2005, showing how Dubai aims high and leads in innovation. The Majid Al Futtaim Group developed this major mall and Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance and Industry, officially launched it in the presence of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister.

The background and importance
The mall which was estimated to cost AED 800 million (equivalent to about USD 218 million), was designed by F+A Architects from the USA. The architecture combines Arabic and Mediterranean influences and makes the place highly appealing. The fact that the mall is situated at Interchange 4 on Sheikh Zayed Road meant it became a popular place for both residents and visitors.

An important thing about the mall is Ski Dubai which is the region’s first indoor ski resort and snow park and it was opened in November 2005. Year-round, the facility is held at a temperature between -1°C and -2°C to give tourists a wintery experience in the desert. There is an indoor stretch of mountain in Ski Dubai, standing 85 meters tall and it offers guests five tracks to try, including a black-run course that is 400 meters long. The resort includes a large Snow Park measuring 3,000 square meters which has sled runs, a body slide on ice, climbing towers, giant snowballs and an ice cave. 41.Guru Nanak Darbar

Guru Nanak Darbar represents both unity among religions and impressive architecture in Dubai. Set in Jebel Ali, 35 km away from the city center, the gurdwara is the first official Sikh temple in the UAE and the whole Gulf region. The Sikh community now has its own temple and community center because of the establishment of the Gurdwara which was not available in the region before.

• HISTORY
• The idea of building Guru Nanak Darbar began when the Sikh community in the UAE which had grown from a few families to over 50,000, wanted a place to hold regular worship meetings. In the past, regular worship services took place in individuals’ homes or makeshift areas that did not work well as the congregation expanded. It took a lot of work and discussions in 2008, but finally His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai graciously gave free land to build the gurdwara. The foundation stone was placed in June 2010 and the construction finished in December 2011. A large crowd of almost 50,000 people came to the gurdwara on January 17, 2012, when it was officially inaugurated.
• The Guru Nanak Darbar was designed by Holford Associates, who combined old Sikh architectural features with modern features. This large structure, covering around 100,000 square feet, has features based on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, including a parikrama (circumambulatory path) of 54 meters and a water body like the sarovar. The large dome in the prayer hall which is 7.2 meters high and 18 meters in diameter, gives the atmosphere a feeling of peace and presence.

43.Bastakia (Old Dubai)

On the banks of Dubai Creek lies Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, also called Al Bastakiya, a special place to explore the city’s past. Its peaceful and simple atmosphere is very different from Dubai’s skyscrapers and shows Emirati traditions.

• History of the Discipline & its Value
• At the end of the 1800s, the area now called Al Bastakiya was developed by rich Persian traders from Bastak in southern Iran. Because of the attractive trade and low taxes offered in Dubai, the settlers built houses with wind towers, called barjeels which directed cool air into the homes.
• In the 1980s, sections of the area were destroyed to give room for new modern developments. Because of a preservation effort led by British architect Rayner Otter and the support of Prince Charles during his 1989 visit, the destruction was put on hold. Dubai’s Municipality made further restorations in 2005 which brought life back to the area, turning it into a place that represents Dubai’s heritage.
• During the 1980s, some parts of the neighborhood were demolished for modern new development projects. Yet, protection of the site was achieved after British architect Rayner Otter started a campaign which Prince Charles supported when he visited in 1989. • In 1896, Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum built the house which was used as both a home and a workplace by the Al Maktoum family. Being positioned next to Dubai Creek made it easy for the rulers to manage shipping, business and government affairs. The royal family continued to live in the house until 1958 and many important happenings in Dubai’s past took place there.
• In 1986, to protect its old architecture, the Dubai Municipality carefully renovated the Al Fahidi Fort. Now, the house is a museum that explains Dubai’s history before oil was discovered and how the leaders of Dubai used to live.

Late 19th-century Arabian architecture is seen in the house with its vaulted ceilings, arched entryways and detailed woodcarvings.

45.World Island

Just across the water from Dubai there are The World Islands, a group of 300 man-made islands designed to appear as a world map. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum envisioned the project and Nakheel Properties developed it, proving that Dubai loves to challenge and upgrade what is considered luxurious and innovative.

• The history and growth of finance
• In 2003, the idea of The World Islands began which was intended to make the Dubai shoreline a globally recognized landmark. The islands cover about 6 by 9 kilometers and were built with 321 million cubic meters of sand and 386 million tons of rock taken from the nearby coast of Dubai. A long curving breakwater, 27 kilometers in length, was built to prevent sea erosion in the archipelago .
• But the global financial crisis in 2008 had a major effect on the project’s progress. Even though nearly 60 percent of the islands were transferred to private investors by then, most of the construction plans were stopped and many islands did not get developed .

Significance
Dubai’s ambition and urge to innovate can be seen in the World Islands. 46.Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

The presence of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) proves that the UAE cares about its special desert environment. Through Emiri decree in 2003, the DDCR was created to cover 225 square kilometers which is about 5% of Dubai’s total area. By establishing this initiative, the UAE protected its first national park to guard the desert and its local wildlife.

• Significance and the Background of the War
• Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa was opened in 1999, marking the start of the DDCR. At the beginning, this area measured 27 square kilometers and was made to help the endangered Arabian Oryx survive. Noticing the achievements of their work, the Dubai Government continued to expand conservation and in 2003, the DDCR was officially created.

47.Dubai Museum

The History of Al Fahidi Fort
Al Fahidi Fort dates from 1787 and is Dubai’s oldest remaining building. Origially built as a fortress for defense, it has since been used as the home for leaders, a place for soldiers, a jail and a storage for weapons over the years . At the same time that the United Arab Emirates formed in 1971, the fort was turned into the Dubai Museum to preserve its cultural background .

48.Dubai Spice Souk

Dubai Spice Souk or Souk Al Attarin, is an active proof of the city’s heritage and cultural mix. Being close to Deira’s Gold Souk, this market affords a wonderful experience of tasting and seeing the Middle Eastern culture.

• In the 1850s, the Spice Souk began at the Al Kabeer Souk (“The Big Market”) and gained from its position close to the dhow moorings on Dubai Creek. In no time, the souk turned into an active place where people could buy hard-to-find spices, herbs and different goods.

49.Etihad Museum

The Etihad Museum in Dubai represents the process by which the United Arab Emirates came together. The museum is located at the place where the UAE’s founding fathers approved the declaration of union in 1971 and it gives a complete look into how the UAE began.

Historical Significance
On December 2, 1971, leaders from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah gathered at the Union House in Dubai to formally sign the declaration forming the United Arab Emirates. The final joining of Ras Al Khaimah to the federation happened in 1972 . The museum was built at this location to save both Union House and the nearby Guest Palace, where key meetings happened.

Architectural Marvel
Moriyama & Teshima Architects, from Canada, created the museum which is designed like a manuscript to show how the UAE’s constitution was signed. Seven golden columns at the front stand for the pens written used by our founding fathers during the signing ceremony. The bulk of the exhibits are set up underground, so the grounds above are not disturbed.

• In the late 1990s, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum envisioned the towers to be almost twice as tall as the existing Dubai World Trade Centre (149 meters). Work on the hotel began in 1996, ending in 1999 and the hotel opened to the public on April 15, 2000.

54.Ibn Battuta Mall

At Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai, you can shop and also travel through 24 countries, just like the medieval Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta. Nakheel Properties built the mall and it opened in April 2005, becoming the world’s largest themed shopping center, with over 521,000 square meters and 300 stores in six courts representing the regions Ibn Battuta explored.

Historical Significance
In the period of 30 years, Ibn Battuta’s travels led him to many different areas, among them North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia and China. A large part of what we know about medieval Islamic cultures comes from his famous travelogue, Rihla (“The Journey”).
