2.Shaniwar Wada Palace

Top 10 Best Places to Visit in Pune for History, Spirituality & Nature 7

Shaniwarwada stands as a key historical site in Pune that tourists rank among the most excellent sites to explore in town. Shaniwarwada functions as a grand fortress constructed in 1732 when the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire administered their rule from there until 1818. Due to losing governance to British East India Company the institution became unusable to them. Shaniwarwada served as the dominant political center of India during the 18th century when the Peshwas were in power making it an essential site to visit in Pune with companions today.

Despite a devastating fire destroying the fort in 1828 visitors can now find remnants of the structure at the tourist destination. The Peshwas built Shaniwarwada as their seven-storied capital structure while they specifically wanted it constructed entirely from stone. Upon finishing the first floor construction the residents of Satara demanded that only Shahu King had the authority to approve stone constructions.

The Peshwas received instruction to finish the structure with brick materials after the Shahu King denied building permission for stone construction. The British attack razed all constructions above the base floor to destruction. Historically the fort had the capacity to house approximately thousand people. Major fort buildings include Thora Rayancha Diwankhana serving as the court reception hall for the eldest royal member and Naachacha Diwankhana functioning as a dance hall and Juna Arsa Mahal operating as the Old Mirror Hall and other such structures. The entire fire destroyed all buildings so descriptions serve as our current source of information about the remaining structure.

The elements of teak created architectural archways which imitated Suru trunks through their teardrop-shaped ornamental teak pillars. Multiple chandeliers decorated the ceilings as polished marble floors hosted Persian rugs of great value. Hindu epic illustrations appeared on the walls of the building. The Peshwa resided in Meghadambari which was the term for the uppermost portion of the building. Among all Pune sightseeing attractions this palace stands out as an essential destination for travelers.

The palace admits visitors between 08:00 am and 06:30 pm daily while Light and Sound presentations start every evening with booking times ranging from 06:30 pm through 08:30 pm.
Location: Shaniwar Peth, Pune, Maharashtra 411030.
