The tomb of Mir Jumla, Governor of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb is situated in Thakuranbari village under Mankachar town in South Salmara Mankachar district, close to the Assam- Meghalaya border.

Mir Jumla, the 69-year-old Mughal under Aurangzeb appointed Governor of Bengal in 1659 laid siege to the Koch kingdom over Cooch Behar, forcing its ruler Raja of Cooch Behar to submit to Mughal rule. It is interesting to note that when Cooch Behar was captured, he very clearly instructed Mughal soldiers to not misuse, attack or looting of common people in any way. Mir Jumla next entered into the Ahom kingdom of Assam in 1662. Yet curiously Mir Jumla’s last campaign was a disaster. Mughal troops were obliged to fight in very difficult terrain with big casualties. There were no longer supplies, and many people perished. Mir Jumla’s forces were obliged to retreat with loss of two thirds their strength.

Returning from Assam, he became gravely ill and died on a ship on March 30, 1663. When he deceased he was seventy-two years of age. He was buried on a hill in Thakuranbari where his tomb is still standing. Sarik Mohammadi Mazar is run by the local Mazar Barik committee and visited by scores of people, historians among them from across the globe.
