10 Best Places to Visit in Valsad for Beaches, Spirituality & Nature 11

Parnera Hill exists as a vital historical and spiritual place in Parnera town of Valsad district Gujarat. The hill elevates 152 meters (499 feet) above the surface and exists some 180 kilometers from Mumbai as well as 6.5 kilometers from Valsad city. The two key access points to the site start inside Atul while another one exists within Parnera.

Historical Significance

This hill contains a fort from ancient times which stands as proof of exceptional engineering advances that took place centuries ago. The Hindu king established the fort first before the Dharampur State took over during the 15th century after being known as Ram Nagar State. At the end of the 15th century Sultan Muhammad Shah Begda won military control of the fort.

Portuguese forces that acted under Daman leadership destroyed and burned down the fort both times in 1558 and 1568.

During his famous Surat raids in the year 1664 and 1670 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj reportedly moved through this fort while he was withdrawing his forces. According to local traditions Shivaji escaped during a fort battle by using an unknown secret exit point and then jumped on his horse.

The military fortress fell into the domain of Maratha commander Shree Moro Pandit who took command in 1696 and established the base as part of the Maratha Empire. The fort experienced multiple changes in control between different forces. The Gaekwads of Vadodara assumed control of the fortress in 1780 until Peshwa Balaji Bajirao III launched his assault against them causing a seven-day intense conflict. The intense battle from 1780 is retold through the Garba song Parnera ni Lol.

During that year Lt. Wales of the British forces led an assault to claim the fort which allowed British military personnel to establish defensive positions against Pindharas. During the early part of the 19th century the military forces had already left the fort. The major destruction of the fort during the 1857 rebellion left several surviving structures which can be seen in the present day.

Stepwells located at Parnera Hill served for storing water when military forces established themselves there. About 150 cannons were positioned at the fort during its history but today just three cannons remain that along with some others have been moved to Valsad R.P.F. Ground.

Temples on Parnera Hill

Parnera Hill draws religious followers and worshippers because visitors visit its temples all year round. The hilltop hosts three prominent temples:

Tourists can find Shree Maha Kali Mata Temple positioned at the highest point of the hill. The temple home to Shree Maha Kali Mata contains a large rocky structure with a hollow space.

The Hanumanji Temple joined with the temples of Shree Chandika and Shree Ambika and Shree Navdurga and Shree Sheetla Mata exist together in a temple near the fort.

A sacred temple named Swayambhu Rameshwar Mahadev Temple honors Lord Shiva at its premises.

The locals believe Shree Chandika Shree Ambika Shree Navdurga Shree Sheetla Mata and Shree Kalika resided together at Parnera Hill in the past. Goddess Kalika became upset for undisclosed reasons while leaving the cave and thus resulted in two temples being established on the hill.
