Astronomical significance highly elevated Ujjain’s position during that time since the Surya Siddhanta and Panch Siddhanta were composed there. Indian astronomers identified Ujjain as the location where the Tropic of Cancer makes its passage while the place holds the position of being the first meridian of longitude according to Hindu geographers. India designated Ujjain as its Greenwich starting from the fourth century B.C. During his governorship of Malwa under king Muhammad Shah of Delhi in 1719 Maharaja Sawai Raja Jaisingh of Jaipur established the observatory in Ujjain. Social achievements aside from leadership and combat skills made Raja Jaisingh a scholar of exceptional ability. At that time Miraza Ulook Beg used books written in Persian and Arabic on Astor-mathematics to study and wrote astronomy books himself. Raja Jaisingh obtained royal permission from Muhammad Shah to construct five observatories in Ujjain, Jaipur, Delhi, Mathura and Varanasi throughout India. The instruments at these observatories were created by Raja Jaisingh using his expertise and knowledge. The observatory in Ujjain benefited from his personal planet observations during a period of eight years while modifying several important Astro-mathematical instruments. The observatory stayed neglected for twenty years after its construction. The first Superintendent of observatory (Late) Shri G.S. Apte and Ganak Churamani together with Siddhantavagish (Late) Shri Narayanji Vyas suggested to (Late) Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia to fix the observatory and provide funding for active operations. The observatory operates every day since this period. Raja Jaisingh made all four instruments including Sun-Dial, Narivalaya, Digansha and Transit during the construction phase of the observatory. Shri G.S.Apte guided the construction of the Shanku(Gnomon) Yantra as the (Late) Director of the project. The re-construction of Digansh Yantra took place in 1974 and Shanku Yantra received redevelopment in 1982. In 1983 the facility produced hand-written marble information boards which presented details of the instruments using both Hindi and English language. A great effort was made by Miss Swarnmala Rawala who served as Ujjain Division Commissioner Ujjain to renovate and beautify the observatory in 2003. Ten solar power operated solar tube-lights were established through Energy Development Corporation while M.P. Laghu Udyog Nigam built banks overlooking the River Shipra at the observatory site.

The temple holds a distinguished position among all ancient holy sites located within Ujjain. Annapurna idol rests between Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati at this sacred place while impassioned in dark vermilion paint. The temple contains the Sri Yantra symbol for power or shakti called shakti along with its holy place belonging to Shiva Purana lore. Legend described in the Skanda Purana shares how the Goddess Chandi received her Harsiddhi title. The two demons Chand and Prachand attempted to force entry into Mount Kailash while Shiva and Parvati spent time alone there. Shiva then summoned Chandi to demolish these two demons which she successfully carried out. Shiva awarded the title of ‘one who vanquishes all’ as her divine epithet when he was satisfied with her work. The Maratha rulers conducted a temple reconstruction project which introduced two unique Maratha art elements consisting of light-bearing pillars. The lamps used during Navaratri create a magnificent display when activated for the festival. The premises harbor an aged well while an artistic pillar stands upon its structure.

Within India Shri Mahakaleshwar of Ujjayini stands as one of the twelve celebrated Jyotirlingas. Different Purans present detailed descriptions of the glorious history of Mahakaleshwar temple. Following Kalidasa numerous Sanskrit poets have sung poetic praises about this temple. Indian time calculation used Ujjain as its central point and Mahakala represented the defining deity of the city. Shiva king of time continues to reign imperishable in Ujjain. Through its high shikhara the temple of Mahakaleshwar stands like a majestic landmark that seems to penetrate both the atmosphere and human hearts. The life of Ujjain people and the city exists under Mahakal’s dominance even as citizens move through their everyday tasks with all their contemporary responsibilities. Additionally the sacred connection remains unbroken between present activities and ancient traditions. Religious tradition describes the Mahakaleshwar lingam as self-generated (swayambhu) which naturally creates its own spiritual power (Shakti) rather than receiving ritual power (mantra-shakti) through religious ceremonies that other Indian religious sculptures receive. The Mahakaleshwar icon faces the southern direction as known as ‘dakshinamurti.’. According to tantric tradition, Mahakaleshwar holds this distinctive feature which makes its unique position among the 12 jyotirlingas. A sacred Omkareshwar Shiva statue lies inside a sanctuary that rests above the Mahakal temple. Ganesh, Parvati and Karttikeya statues are located next to each other in the west, north and east directions outside the main chamber of worship. Nandi resides in the southern direction of the temple. Individuals may witness the Nagchandreshwar deity on the third level only during Nagpanchami but during Mahashivaratri they can observe continuous night worship at the location.
