A peaceful religious community, Totopara is surrounded by emerald hills and thriving forests of West Bengal, North, near the Indo-Bhutan border. But Totopara is not an ordinary village. The Thotopara was initially the only village inhabited by Toto tribe, marked as one of the few smallest and most distinctive indigenous people on Earth.

The Toto tribe was at risk of extinction in the 1950’s. Community at large was under threat to disappear altogether since only 321 people were recorded in only 69 households in the 1951 census. The Toto tribe has started to witness an excellent renewal due to government and anthropologists’ intervention as well as strategic measures such as curtailing outside connection and education.

The number rose to 926 by 1991 and 1,184 in 2001, all still in Totopara. Today the quantity of Toto is increasing systematically due to programs that combine modern development with protection of their cultural heritage.

Strategically placed close to the Torsa River and between the Buxa tiger reserve, Totopara is a serene env userList ion with an unruffled landscape that speaks of its insular character. Living in houses made of bamboo and wood, the Totos practice unique customs and have their own language, Toto whose origins lie with Tibeto-Burman.

This place flourishes the strength of a communal spirit represented in customs associated to nature, oral stories, and ancestral rituals. Despite the modern change, the Totos have managed to retain many of the cultural traditions including their special dressing, the usual foods, and the marriage ceremonies.
