The concept for Akshardham Temple was conceived by Yogiji Maharaj and built by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the former leader of BAPS (Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha). The place for construction of the temple was at first not decided on, and places as far as Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad were suggested to the Guru but he remained adamant for the dream of Yogiji Maharaj who wanted to get it constructed on the banks of the Yamuna River. Considering all this, Pramukh Swami Maharaj bought land of 30 acres on the Yamuna ghats and began executing the construction process. Temple was solemnized on 6 November 2005 and right now Akshardham Temple has 70 per cent of the visitors visiting in Delhi from all around the world.
