Hidden in the peaceful hills of Meghalaya, Nongkhnum Island is the best secret of Northeast India. It is the second largest river island in Asia after Majuli in Assam but still quite unhurried and relatively unknown.
Nongkhnum presents an experience of a quiet away from the touristy crowd kind of a retreat for the nature lovers, the backpackers and the people who want some solitude. It is an experience of peacefulness and it is beautiful and it is solitary.
Where is Nongkhnum Island?
Nongkhnum Island is approximately 14 kilometers away from the headquarters of West Khasi Hills – Nongstoin, and nearly 100 kilometers from Shillong, the capital of the state of Meghalaya. This river island is created by the confluence of the Wah Kynshi and Namliang rivers; the river island stretches lush meadows, sandy beaches, and mild surfaces.
The trip to the island is equally rewarding as the site itself, with winding roads, misty hills and beautiful country-side views.
A beautiful valley by the name of Wah Rilang which is situated 5 kilometers away from the town of Mawkyrwat lies snugly in the South West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Situated within a distance of about 1 Km from Mawranglang village along the Nongstoin- Mawkyrwat road, this hidden gem is just what you need for a calm yet exciting day out watching the soothing sounds of nature and scenic river views.
If you are the lover of nature, a casual traveler or just one searching for a peaceful place for a picnic outside the madding crowd then Wah Rilang has got a lot for you.
Wah Rilang is located in a verdant green valley with moderate inclinations and winding river that further enhances its glory. The very name of “Wah Rilang” can be translated to “River of Echo,” reminding of the quiet reflection atmosphere of the place.
From the main road, after you come in, you will find the valley revealing itself into a harmonious scenery that is perfect for taking photos, for relaxation or even to catch some fresh mountain air.
For someone who wants to go trekking in an unusual place in Meghalaya, Mawthadraishan Peak should be the first place you should be headed to because it offers breathtaking views, adventure and serene landscapes. This peak is the highest in the region and overlooks the area with a panoramic view of about 360 degrees extending well beyond the state borders, positioned at the altitude of approximately 1,800 meters above sea level.
Move on trekking from the top itself to Mawphanlur – where one finds hilltop ponds, fields for grazing, and peace that is unfettered and unspoiled. It is a preferred camping destination for the local travellers where one can stay and rest before proceeding on the trek.
