What makes Namakkal Fort unusual is its unusual placement. The fort is located atop a huge rock outcrop, providing 1.5 acres of flat land, which was used as site for construction of the fort. The climb up to the fort is via a very steep, but very picturesque flight of steps from the south west side, taking you through the curving arms of the rock face itself.
As you ascend, the structure starts revealing itself – there are parts of ancient brick and stone structures, believed to have seen many battles, especially of the Chola dynasty in the 9th century. Though the passage of time has effaced much, the fort’s grandeourse is still as present as ever.
