Ao Phang Nga National Park was founded on April 29, 1981 and it’s famously known as a protected marine area in Phang Nga, southern Thailand. The 400 square kilometers of the park are famous for its fascinating limestone scenery, large mangrove forests and wide range of species.

Geological Significance
It took millions of years for the park’s cliffs and islands to be formed by deposits, earth movement and wind and water erosion. These karst formations reach heights of up to 400 meters and give the region a fantastical view with tall pillars, lots of caves and lagoons tucked away.

✨ How the Place Helps Us Understand Culture and History
Several fascinating islands centered on history and culture are part of the park.

  • Khao Phing Kan (James Bond Island): Was made famous around the world due to its appearance in the 1974 Jan. The spectacular limestone found on the island draws many tourists each year.
  • Ko Panyi: An old Muslim village built above the water, well-known for its sports field on waters and a lively community of locals.
  • There are signs of human life in the area, recognized through artifacts and ancient burial sites which date all the way back thousands of years.

Only a half hour from Phuket by car, Samet Nangshe Viewpoint has gone from being an almost unknown place to one of the most famous viewpoints in Phang Nga. Viewing the amazing karsts of Phang Nga Bay from above, people are amazed by its peaceful ambiance, the noteworthy milky stars and its beautiful nature.

  • Story of Samet Nangshe Viewpoint

Previously, Samet Nangshe was visited mostly by locals and those who fished nearby. In the mid-2010s, a local, nature-loving businessman built a simple road and started publicizing the vista with pictures on the internet. Because of its jaw-dropping sunrises, the spot has attracted plenty of photographers.

Opting for campsites, cafés and rest stops has helped over the years and they give guests what they need, yet the wild charm is still around.

  • What matters about the Viewpoint

At Samet Nangshe Viewpoint, visitors can find one of the finest panoramic sights in southern Thailand. Once at the summit, you get a view of wide emerald waters, dramatic limestone and endless stretching mangrove forests.

Due to being far from town, the spot’s sky is free of much light pollution. As a result, this is one of the only places in Thailand where you can see the Milky Way without any devices during the dry season.

The perspective takes its name from the village of Ban Samet Nangshe in the region. This area is known for its peaceful lifestyle and when you go to the viewpoint, you might find yourself learning about Thai culture and eating local dishes.

Being a model for traveling with sustainability, Samet Nangshe’s development as a tourist site has drawn attention in Thailand. The tourism approach proves that local communities may gain from tourism as long as the environment is protected.

  • When Should You Visit

The time to visit enjoying the extraordinary sight is when the sun rises. The combination of mist and the light from the rising sun behind the karsts makes everything look almost unexpected.

If you’re a fan of stargazing, then exploring the park in the evening means you might be able to see the stars at their brightest, along with the Milky Way occasionally appearing.
