Historical and Mythological Significance

According to Hindu mythology the temple’s origins date back to the Krutha Yuga. According to legend, Raja Kupendra, the king from Surya Vamsha dynasty, had a chronic disease of the skin. While on a hunting mission in Kethaki Vanam forest he found a stream and took bath in its water and was the victim of a miracle cure. That night Lord Shiva himself visited his dream, and called him to reconstruct a temple there. As commanded by the divine, Raja Kupendera constructed the temple and turned his stream into a holy tank identified as the Amrutha gandum, consisting of eight theerthas: Narayana, Dharma, Rushi, Varuna, Soma, Rudra, Indra and Datha. This tank is thought to have healing properties and forms part of the temple rituals.
Moreover, it is believed that Lord Brahma himself placed the Shiva Lingam in this area and did this meditate in this place after he created the world. Nothing ventured nothing gained, the temple is uniquely allowed to use Kethaki flowers in its rituals that elsewhere are forbidden in Shiva worship.

Sri Veerabhadra Swamy Temple located in Bonthapally, Telangana is a highly treasure house dedicated to Lord Veerabhadra, a rather fierce avatar of Lord Shiva. Located about 42 kilometers away from Sangareddy and about 35 kilometers away from Hyderabad, this temple is a great spiritual place within the region.

Historical Significance

The temple’s age can be attributed to the Kakatiya dynasty (that existed in the 12th century) who adopted Kakatiyan-Chalukyan architectural styles. The legend has it that the temple used to be a small shrine. One night the shepherd coming across heard a divine voice command him to move the deity. Wearing the idol around his shoulders, he walked until he was tired and he placed the idol there. Afterwards, the deity told him not to look back as he got back home, but the shepherd turned the other way and turned into a statue, and remains in the village even to date.
