Nestled in the heart of lush, rolling hills of Mizoram in North East India lies a well hidden untouched piece of heaven — Dampa Tiger Reserve of India. Stretching on 500 kilometers, this incredibly vast rainforest zone is a rich stable of biodiversity and a vital sanctuary for numerous forms of wildlife.
Declared as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, Dampa is much more to it than just its eponymous. It is a safe home for many endangered and rare species and its a very valuable rag for conservation in India’s north east. Apart from tigers, Dampa is inhabited by leopards, elephants and the rarely spotted swamp deer and all these inhabit an incredibly dense and green terrain. Crashing between the branches, India’s sole ape, the hoolock gibbon, adds its own special note to the reserve’s uniqueness and gives a hauntingly beautiful accompaniment to the forest.
Birdwatchers term Dampa as a bird paradise. It is home to an amazing variety of bird life particularly low-lying galliformes – a species of ground waking birds with the ribsy plumage and shy attitude from people. Maybe the most impressive thing is that three species of leafbirds (which normally, or should we say historically, would have been localised to Brunei and therefore unspecified) are all present – all three of them Indo peculiar – Chloropsis, that is. These gorgeous birds, with their verdant feathers perfectly matching the subtlety of their surroundings, bring a thrill of delight to who are privileged enough to have sighting.
