The Khongjom War Memorial Complex serves as a holy place which honors Manipuri warriors through their sacrifices and their unending bravery in the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War. About one hundred miles from Imphal inside the Thoubal district of Manipur stands the historical site that commemorates a dramatic yet brave battle which became a turning point in the state’s anti-colonial resistance.

History records the British military opening fire for the first time in the war through an unjustifiable act which triggered a violent and destructive conflict on March 24, 1891. The Manipuris maintained their territorial independence against British Empire power because they remained committed to protecting their sovereign rights. A brutal war challenged every Manipuri individual to demonstrate their fortitude as well as endurance.

A total of 50 Manipuris participated in the resistance against colonial rule — Pukhramba Tanka led their brave efforts together with Khumbong Subedar and Leisang Jamadar and Athokpa Dewan until their loss of life. A group of devoted Manipuri warriors conducted courageous battles at and near Manipur capital through direct engagements with British soldiers who possessed superior weaponry. Armed forces from the Tangkhul group joined the casualties which demonstrated that all hill and valley residents of Manipur united in this shared fight.
