Pallegar head Hanumappa Nayaka originally constructed the fort in the Vijayanagara Empire period yet Hyder Ali made major changes in 1769 through his work with a trained French engineer.

According to local tradition the French engineer who rebuilt the fort made a profound error when he failed to notice that Kumbara Gudda exceeded Ballari Gudda in height thus allowing enemy surveillance of the fort. The mistake caused Hyder Ali to become enraged to the point where he commanded the execution of the engineer. The East Gate of the fort serves as the final resting place of the engineer according to some reports but others state the burial spot belongs to a Muslim holy man.

A large tract of rock-strewn hillocks connecting the areas between Daroji of Sandur taluk and Ramasagar of Hospet Taluk in Ballari district has always served as the natural home for Indian Sloth Bears. In October 1994 the Government of Karnataka officially established Bilikallu reserve forest as the 5,587.30 hectare Daroji Bear Sanctuary.

The area extends from 15o 14′ to 15o 17′ N latitude and 76o 31′ to 76o 40′ E longitude throughout its space.
