Dating as far as 500 years old, Barpeta Satra is an important pilgrimage site for Assam. It is the creation of a saint named Madhabdev in 1583 AD and was earlier named as Barpetathan. Saint Madhabdev stayed in Tongabari for 8 long years but came out of this place to carry out his discipleship under the guidance of Sri Srimanta Sankaradeva and handed-over the responsibility of the satra to his one of the disciples named Sri Mathura Das Burha Ata.

Satra’s beginning is – 3 Batchara (entry gates). The main compound is safeguarded by wall, are Nahati Batchara (west side input) , Uttar Hati Batchara (from north input) and Dakshinhati Batchara (from the south input) . At opposite (east) side of the satra a river flow surroundings by-granting (Hari Jaan). Public transport does not ply beyond these Batchara, people are not allowed to travel in any vehicle The regulations are notified on board Assamese and Hindi. It was originally kutcha house but was later concreted in the year 1870 and is vast with wall fresco.
