Located in the picturesque town of Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh, is a secret architectural secret waiting to be revealed – The Chhatris of Shivpuri. These beautiful marble recumbent statues rest as a nice tribute to the Scindia dynasty exemplifying history, art and their respect united into one incredible piece.
The Chhatris were built for the scindia rulers one of the most powerful royal house in the central India and is located in a lovely crafted Mughal style garden. These cenotaphs (in Hindi language chhatris) were constructed to commemorate and respect the heritage of royal family. The garden design, which has geometric design, water paths and the dense shady trees gives us a peaceful area which provides an ideal setting to match the solemn grandeur of the main edifice.
Two important Chhatris are the ones of Madhav Rao Scindia and his mother, Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia. These two monuments are facing each other and they symbolize the endless bond between mother and son — an impressive architectural conversation carved in stone.
Madhav National Park contains a hidden royal attraction called George Castle that towers as the highest point within its forested domain. This historical site occupies the tallest point within the park with its location at 484 meters (1,597 feet) above the sea delivering breathtaking central Indian vistas and historical insights.
During 1911 construction under the Scindia ruler of Gwalior, George Castle started its life to welcome King George V of England as a special guest. During the colonial period before independence royal British sovereigns commonly engaged in tiger hunting expeditions and the monarch planned to visit this region for such purposes. The fortress was planned as a luxurious place for spending the night in the wilderness area. Although King George V changed his plans the castle stands today as a monument to royal hostelry and British colonial building design.
Shivpuri town locates the park which lies within the upper Vindhyan hills. The Park served as both a royal hunting destination and private area of Mughal emperors as well as Maharaja of Gwalior. The authorities established the national park status in 1958. The park features two access points where one exists near Shivpuri town on NH-25 (Old Jhansi road) about 5 kilometers and the other stands on NH-3 (Agra-Mumbai road) at 7 kilometers from Shivpuri toward Gwalior. The natural park possesses an ecological environment that includes lakes together with forests and grasslands. The forest environment supports Nilgai along with Chinkara and Chowsinga antelopes and contains both Sambar and Chital and Barking Deer deer. The Leopard together with Wolf and Jackal and Fox and Wild Dog and Wild Pig and Porcupine and Python can frequently be seen roaming in the park.
