2. Coringa Sanctuary

Coringa Sanctuary lies approximately 15 kilometers away from Kakinada through the Kakinada Yanam Road. Coringa Sanctuary obtained its name from a small village located in East Godavari District Andhra Pradesh and was established as a wildlife sanctuary by Andhra Pradesh Govt through G.O.Ms.No – 484, Forests and Rural Development (For.III) Department dated 5-7-1978 with a mission to protect mangrove vegetation within an area measuring 235 Sq.Km of Godavari Mangroves. The geographical boundaries of the area extend from 16o-30′ to 17o-00′ N latitudes and from 82o-14′ to 82o-23’E longitudes. These salt-tolerant forest systems exist exclusively in tropical and sub-tropical intertidal environments across the world. These habitats form in regions where the tidal wave meets the sea but do not rise above high tide and extend deep into the land to mean sea level areas including sheltered shorelines and tidal creeks and lagoons.

The Mangroves create expansive and fruitful forests along shielded coastal lines if habitat factors support their growth. The mangroves support a precise combination of flora and fauna which thrive in this environment alone and not anywhere else. The eastern part of Andhra Pradesh hosts Mangrove vegetation inside Godavari and Krishna river estuaries. The total Mangrove forested area in Andhra Pradesh stays at 582 Sq.KM. which corresponds to 9% of the State’s total forested area and represents 2% of the local geographical area. Typical Mangrove vegetation exists only partially across the entire area covered by mangroves. The territory contains segments of open forest land. Sandy patches and Mud-flats.

A set of conservation measures exists for the purpose of maintaining current mangrove ecosystems and their development. Bundlings of mangrove land represent as part of the protected areas network. The establishment of MANGROVES along with Mangrove sanctuaries must include core areas as part of a plan to prevent encroachment.

Youth service teams should implement protective measures to maintain intensified watch and ward operations. Large-scale afforestation projects will be started by digging channels at regular distances of 12.5 mts. The seedlings of 60 cms height. The World bank Assistance and Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India finance the process of planting seedlings that grew in the nursery at 2.0 mts spacing across sloped channel edges.

Hope Island is located at 16.97°N 82.35°E.

Approximately two centuries ago the sea waters from Godavari delta created a new 9.9 mile (16 km) long spit which we now recognize as Hope Island.

Kakinada Bay exists between the Kakinada shorelines and Hope Island. The water surface area of the bay amounts to 100 square kilometers (39 square miles). This island prevents Kakinada from suffering significant damage caused by powerful ocean waves from the Bay of Bengal. The natural barrier of Hope Island provides ships anchored in Kakinada bay with a peaceful environment that makes Kakinada Port one of the safest natural ports along the Indian Eastern Coast.

The northern region of the island known as the “Godavari point” extends toward the Bay of Kakinada harbor entrance and Kakinada harbor entrance.
