The project designers had set the initial cost at Rs.1470 crores. Under the direction of Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) the project costs were cut significantly from Rs.1470 crores to Rs.674 crores. The construction of the dam became possible within forty months at a total budget of Rs.520 crores.

After becoming the ruler in 1656 Ali Adil Shah II started developing Bara Kamaan. The ruler developed this architectural structure for surpassing Gol Gumbaz in its impressive dimensions to establish his lasting architectural legacy. Designers envisioned an elevated subsurface foundation that surpassed Gol Gumbaz in dimensions by measuring 157.6 feet square and reaching an elevated height of 20 feet.
