1.Talpagiri Ranganathaswamy Temple

Snuggled in the peaceful banks of the River Pennar, entitled to its reverence, heritage and architectural glory, Sri Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple is a solace of devotion, history and architectural masterpiece in Nellore. Several centuries old, this temple is not only one of the major spiritual centers of Andhra Pradesh but also the emblem of strong cultural legacy of the region.

Only 5 km away from Nellore Bus Stand, the temple stands out due to its majestic 29-meter height Galigopuram (tower) decorated by seven golden Kalasams. The beautifully designed seven-storeyed Maha Gopuram on the eastern side is a magnificent specimen of South Indian temple style of architecture that attracts thousands of devotees and tourists every year.

Sri Kashyapa Maharshi performed a sacred yagna in the banks of the Pennar river according to legends. Lord Ranganatha Swamy (a form of Lord Vishnu) appeared on this shrine through His penance. 2.Jonnawada

Roughly 12 km from Nellore on the river Pennar’s serene banks lies one of the most spiritual sanctuaries, Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Kamakshi Tai Temple in Jonnawada, whose munificent glory draws millions of pilgrims all year-round. Situated amid the idyllic village of Jonnawada of the Buchireddipalem Mandal, this temple is a deep representation of divine grace, old rituals, and reliving faith over time.

Legend says that this place was a site of a great yagna (sacred fire ritual) conducted by the great sage Kashyapa Brahma Maharshi during the Treta Yuga. Amused at the triumph of the yagna, Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy appeared out from the sacred fire itself, blessing the place and the devotees simultaneously. This rather unusual occurrence made the place take the name ‘Yagnavatika Jonnawada’ – the sacred grove of yagna.

Built in AD 1150, the temple is an eternal tower of dedication. The presiding deity, the Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy is worshipped along with Goddess Kamakshi Tai, who is said to be an embodiment of a powerful incarnation of the Shakti, the divine feminine energy.

3.Narasimhakonda

Exalted on the top of Narasimhakonda, the Vedagiri Lakshmimarasimha Swamy Temple towers as a magnificent epitome for devotion and age-old heritance. This temple, nestled by the Southern bank of Pinakini river, 15 km from Nellore and surrounded by history, spirituality and importance in mythology.

The temple has a history of nearly 5 centuries in this location, but the deeper the roots go back – inscribed on ancient rocks it is initially erected by Pallava King Narsimha Varma in the 9th century. This venerated place wonderfully combines the architectural refinement of the Pallavas and the abundant spiritual practice of South India.

The legends say that the temple was founded on the banks of the Pinakini River by the sage Kasyapa which was a very auspicious place where divine energies preferred to stay there. The Brahmapurana, one of Vedic scriptures was held in reverence, talks about the Saptarishis (seven great sages) who performed a grand yagnam (sacrificial ritual) atop Narasimhakonda and thus sanctified the hill as a powerful spiritual one.

On the top of hill are situated seven holy tanks called Koneru, renovated and surrounded by beautiful Mandapas (pillared pavilions). These water bodies complement the calmness of the ambience and essentially play a role in the rituals of the temple.

People come to this sacred place because Lord Narasimha is seen in a huge rock form known as ‘Penusila,’ meaning ‘huge rock’ — the place’s name comes from this.

People believe that Lord Narasimha was seen here in a rare ‘Yoga Mudra’, an interwoven meditative pose that stands for great meditation and spiritual energy. Seeing the magnificent rock form, devotees feel this place is a rare space for blessings and meditation.

It is said that Lord Narasimha, after fighting Hiranyakashipu, took a holy bath in Penchalakona, which eased His great rage and let Him withdraw His manifestation. Cleaning Himself after the battle with Hiranyakashipu, the Lord earned the name Somasila Narasimhaswamy, and He is honored as part of the Nava Narasimhas worshipped in this area.

5.Somasila Dam

Somasila Dam, situated near Somasila Village in Ananthasagaram Mandal, Nellore District, is one of the region’s biggest and most crucial irrigation projects. As it stands over the River Pennar, it is a vital engineering structure needed for strong irrigation, supported agriculture, and changed lives for district farmers.

The aim of the Somasila Project was to use the waters from the Pennar River for the irrigation of Nellore’s dry lands. With this project, crop yields have grown, farmers have a steady source of water, and the economy in the area has benefited.
