I chose to explore the Phraya Phichai Dap Hak Memorial in Uttaradit, as I had heard the city’s most important attraction was here. Phraya Phichai, remembered for his courage, leadership and true loyalty, is considered a great hero in the history of Thailand. The reason for his name, Dap Hak or Broken Sword, is that he kept fighting fiercely even with one broken sword during a famous fight.

Phraya Phichai’s courage and devotion are celebrated at the memorial which features a bronze statue of him in front of the city hall. Even though the monument is extraordinary, the area surrounding it is peaceful and with only a few services in the vicinity. Without seats, shops or eating places nearby, walking there takes only a short time and it is not a place you go for an extended stay. Anyone keen to learn more about Phraya Phichai can visit the Phraya Phichai Dap Hak Museum in Ban Huai Ka, Nai Mueang Subdistrict. You can learn about his history and the world around him at this museum.

Hidden in the peaceful Uttaradit province, Bo Lek Nam Phi showcases ancient Thailand’s achievements in metallurgy. Lek Nam Phi which is known for its resilience and resistance to rust, is what the village is famous for. The steel was previously reserved for crafting weapons that only members of the royal family could own.

A Look into Crafting of Steel
We began our adventure by visiting the two major ponds around, called Bor Phra Saeng and Bor Phra Khan. Previously, these old iron ponds were the providers of iron ore which was turned into weapons that kings could use. These sites are currently recognized as historical sites, allowing travelers to learn about history.

Steel fishing is one of the most popular activities at the SIU. Carrying our long rod and using magnets as bait, we tried our best to catch bits of Lek Nam Phi steel from the bottom of the pond. Not only did we have a blast while practicing this skill, but we also learned a lot about the old system of making steel.

The spiritual aspect of the site and the souvenirs offered here play important roles.
Many people believe that the steel made in Bo Lek Nam Phi is holy. Many believe that metallic spirit is present in steel, explaining why it is used in making items for religion. You can find these souvenirs at local shops, so we decided to take home an intriguing Lek Nam Phi magic dagger to remind us of our trip.

The Bo Lek Nam Phi Folk Museum
It is important to visit the Bo Lek Nam Phi Folk Museum. As you enter the museum’s old-style buildings, you see antique cooking utensils, Lek Nam Phi-made swords and knives and wax artwork showing the old methods of producing and shaping iron.

Tranquility Present
Apart from its interesting history and culture, Bo Lek Nam Phi is a serene place to stay. The environment here is peaceful and the scenery is soothing which makes taking walks or just relaxing an easy choice. Three guardian angels watch over the steel ponds and visitors can enjoy visiting their small shrines.

Nestled in Nam Pat District of Uttaradit Province, Sak Yai Forest Park provides a unique view of Thailand’s lovely nature. The area’s chief attraction is Ton Sak Yai, the world’s biggest teak tree. This tall monument has a height of 38.5 meters (126 feet) and a girth of 10.2 meters (33.5 feet). The tree lost its peak to a storm in 1977, though it still reminds us of nature’s beauty.

A quick look at Critical Theory
Visitors are able to calmly walk along a wooden bridge that circles Ton Sak Yai. You can get up close to the tree and take many pictures along this path. Even though people cannot walk on the bridge, since it is protected, standing in front of this amazing tree is truly impressive.

When the weather conditions are right, choose to visit.
You can visit the park any time, but the best season is from November to February. Walking and exploring the nearby forest is more pleasant, given how cool the weather is now. Wear comfortable shoes and bring insect repellent with you, as the area has plenty of plants and animals.

In the peaceful town of Tung Yang, close to Uttaradit City, 5 kilometers away, Wat Phra Borommathat Tung Yang displays Thailand’s heritage through its unique temples. Scholars believe that this temple, roughly 700 years old, was built in Tung Yang, the pre-Sukhothai city.

Historical Significance
The construction of the temple started in Sukhothai, when Maha Thammaracha I (King Phraya Lithai) was on the throne. As the legend goes, the king wanted Buddha’s relics to be buried in an underground cave and a monastery or chedi, was built to house them. The first construction was a chedi that housed rice-bunches which Phraya Taka rebuilt as a chedi in the Mon-Burmese style. In 1908, the earthquake damaged the chedi’s tip which required Luang Por Kaew Sombun to continue making repairs.

Architectural Highlights
There are several important buildings found at the temple complex.

  • Phra Borommathat Chedi: Despite its name, the main chedi is shaped like a bell and stands on a three-tiered square platform, each corner of which is decorated with a small pagoda. Many people believe it holds a relic of the Buddha’s chest.
  • Wihan Luang: Wihan Luang is where the precious Buddha image called Luang Pho To is revered in the Mara-Vijaya position. Those who come here believe that honoring the god can grant their wishes.
  • Ancient Artifacts: In the temple, ancient cooking tools, swords forged in Lek Nam Phi metal and wax models of iron-making processes are on display.

The five-tier cascade at Mae Phun makes it famous with nature lovers and photographers. Visitors can go hiking around the area and appreciate the peacefulness of the environment. People flock to the lower area of the falls because the cold water is perfect for relaxing and having a picnic.

Next to the waterfall, people can eat at a restaurant that also serves as a fish spa. After enjoying tasty classic Thai dishes, guests can soak their feet in pools filled with small fish that help to remove dead skin. The wonderful food and healing nature provide an experience no one will soon forget.

9.TT Garden

Situated in the city center, TT Garden was previously where people gathered to drink a refreshing beer outdoors. With its open beer garden and the cozy restaurant upstairs, the place was known for being a welcoming spot for friends and family.

Many people bought and sold beer in the beer garden, where outdoor refreshments stood out and unfortunately, it is no longer open. Besides it, the upstairs sukiyaki restaurant, famous for its cozy atmosphere and delicious dishes, now closed as well. Many are disappointed by the quick closure, as TT Garden was a favorite place to unwind and meet friends for some.

With the key attractions out of action, people are now visiting other places for entertainment. Even though TT Garden used to delight customers by being a peaceful spot, today it seems to be quieter and less inviting.

10.Friday Department Store

At the center of Uttaradit on Boroma-At Road, Friday Department Store is very convenient for you to shop, eat and meet your everyday needs in one place. Since it has a nice array of recognizable chains alongside local stores, this two-floor shop is a place people both from the community and on vacation enjoy visiting.

Despite its relatively small size, Friday Department Store welcomes KFC, Amazon and Mister Donut alongside other shops. Regardless of whether you need to shop or just browse, you can find what you want at a mall and avoid the crowded atmosphere of a big mall.

If you feel like eating something, you should try the second-floor food court. You should visit the service counter, take a “Food Card”, fill it with money and use it to pay for whatever you eat. What makes it extra special? If you don’t spend all your balance, it will be returned to you at the end of your visit. All of us decided on Thai-style Japanese meals which each one of us managed to enjoy for just less than 100 baht.

Because it is cool and downtown, Friday Department Store provides relief from the hot weather in Uttaradit. It is a pleasant place to shop, have a meal or pass some time during a busy day in the city.
