The history of Tine Chau Pagoda goes back about 250 years. Today, the place is in Binh Luong Hamlet and it is dear to the local community because of its history. At first, the monks found the area, situated on an islet, very suitable for meditation and built a small hut which was known as Di Da Pagoda. Early in the 20th century, monks from My Tho came to the area and saw that the pagoda needed repair. They repaired the pagoda and named it Thoi Son Monastery. Even the interior design of Pagoda is interesting and includes four pillars and a giant statue of Amida.
There is an old custom in Vinh Long to produce pottery and bricks from the layers that have built up along the river. Kilns were built by people using the clay that had naturally been deposited and their skills in making bricks and ceramics flourished. Because these kilns are built in the center of the village, planning a visit with a guide is important. Included in the area were the famous temples and pagodas which were built using clays and bricks. The area offers chances to learn about their unique art and you can keep the art you create during your visit.
Not to be mixed up with the famous Hanoi temple of the same name. It was constructed somewhere between 1864 and 1866 and many renovations have been carried out, all keeping the building’s traditional style. Just like the main Temple of Literature in Hanoi, this temple was built to worship and study the sayings of Confucius. The worship centres for the complex are the Dai Thanh main temple and 2 other small shrines named Ta Vu and Huu Vu, dedicated to 72 of Confucius’ students.
Another worthwhile place to go in Vinh Long is An Binh Island, just across the town. Extending for 60 kilometres and covering 4 communes; people mostly call it the fruit orchard district. Also, you can visit small villages and pagodas, with the most renowned being Tien Chau Pagoda in Vinh Long. Most villages in Nilgiris are involved in growing fruits and give a peaceful setting for you to see. You can buy some food made nearby and try it on the island or you can just relax watching the beautiful scenery.
Once the highlights of the pottery villages and other places have been seen, you will find that the city’s central market is only a short bike ride from the city centre. The market is full of stalls, with many famous drinks and dishes that locals enjoy. You can find an area in the market where street vendors are selling freshly gathered fruits and vegetables. Apart from being a mall, this place is famous for its lovely views.
