Borra Caves are deep in the Eastern Ghats in the state of Andhra Pradesh and are one of the country’s largest and grandest cave systems. Situated at an approximate elevation of 705 meters above the sea level in the Ananthagiri Hills, these caves are a breath-taking mix of natural geological creations, coupled with mythological tales, enticing thousands of outsiders every year — including foreign tourists.

Borra Caves were developed several million years ago due to the movement of the Gosthani river, which also still flows from within the cave system. These karstic limestone caves go for 80m down as well as maintain huge underground surface that is packed with stalactites and stalagmites.

Hidden in the caves are a naturally created Sivalingam, with a constant dripping of water from the cave ceiling onto the Sivalingam. Legend says that this Shiva Lingam is sacred with it being the birth of the Gosthani River. Spiritual charm of the caves is increased by the mystique about this formation.
