1.Chandramouleshwara Temple

The Unkal located at the outskirts of Hubbali has a great Chandramouleshwara Temple famous for Chalukyan Architectural style. This 900 year old temple stands as a reflection to the art and craft of Chalukya dynasty. Though not famous, it is no less impressive than famous places such as the Chennakeshava Temple of Belur.

Architectural Significance.

Unlike of various other Shiva temples in North Karnataka, this Chandramouleshwara temple is made in differnce design. It features:

Four doorways facing different directions

Two massive Shivalingas within the temple

Intricate black granite carved walls and pillar

Beautiful sculptures, include image of dancing Lord Ganesha and Jaalandhra sculpture which create a treat for the eyes.

The mode of construction of the temples follows Chalukya style architecture that flourished under the skilled hands of architect, sculptors and masons of whom their names have got lost in the pages of history.

Historical Significance

  • Two stone inscriptions from the 12th century in the Unkal village, indicate that temple dates back to 11th and 12th century. These inscriptions shed light on the past of the temple and grandeur of the Chalukya times.

Kundgol is famous for the Shambulingeshwara Temple, a marvellous architectural in ancient side of 11th century. This temple is a tribute to the glorious past of Western Chalukya Empire and hence its wonderful carvings and the historical importance.

Besides Shambulingeshwara the town hosts Brahma temple and other several revered shrines which are Rameshwara, Basavanna, Kalmeshwara, Siddalingeshwara temples, located in Vadolli which is about 8 km from Kundgol. The Rameshwara Temple, especially, is famous for its massive star-formed ‘Shivalinga’ placed within its core.

Kundgol is also noted to be the birthplace of the renowned Hindustani classical musician Pandit Sawai Gandharva (Rambhau Kundgolkar). He groomed icons like Gangubai Hangal and Bhimsen Joshi in the process adding to the town’s cultural diversity.

Historically, Kundgol was a separate non-contiguous part of princely state Jamkhandi till 1948, further adds a shade of historical mystery to this little town.

History Buffs, Spirit Seekers and Music Enthusiast all will find a Salutation at Kundgol.

3.Shri Amruteshwara Temple

Shri Amruteshwara Temple located at one place located in the Dharwad District – Annigeri (Navalgund) is one of the important heritage sites. Built in 1050 AD, this temple, in a structure of Dravida articulation, is an early example and also first temple of all that has been built completely out of soapstone.

Amruteshwara Temple shows Kalyani Chalukya style of architecture which is notable by intricate carving & large structures. The roof of the temple is upheld by seventy-six intricately carved pillar, while the walls are filled with mythological portrayal, indicating the great craftsmanship of the ancient artisans. The massive, dark stone structure has a sense of divinity and timelessness in it.

Amruteshwara Temple served as a transit point for later temple buildings, the most famous being Mahadeva Temple located at Itagi. Built in 1112 CE, the Mahadeva Temple has similar attendant structural elements and design as the previous one hence increasing the lineage of Kalyani Chalukya Architecture.

4.Sadhankeri Park

Sadhankeri Park in Dharwad is a peaceful place which is famous for its natural splendor and of historical importance.
